Already during the time of the Roman Empire there was evidence of a settlement of today's street area. When the foundations for the “Germania fish hall” were laid in 1905, numerous vessels and wall remains from Roman and medieval times were found. The street name, Hurengasse, which was official in the Middle Ages and early modern times, refers to its use as a brothel street back then. The settlement of the pleasure industry at this point is due to the close proximity to the two spa districts on the Büchel and on Komphausbadstrasse. As too offensive, the street was first renamed "Mistgasse" and in 1872 by a council resolution with royal approval in Antoniusstraße. Patron saint is St. Anthony of Padua , who was particularly committed to the poor and prostitutes.

Antoniusstraße has been home to other businesses in addition to prostitution since time immemorial . The chemical factory set up by the pharmacist Johann Peter Joseph Monheim and operated by his son Viktor Monheim and his son Johannes Theodor Monheim caught fire here on June 29, 1883 and triggered a catastrophic fire that also struck Aachen city hall . The biggest Aachener operation for the production of fine paper, the paper store Frehn had until World War II, based in the Antoniusstraße 29 1905 were Germania fish halls of the entrepreneur Wilhelm Frohn built. The company no longer exists today. The building is used as a restaurant.

During the Second World War, the German Labor Front was registered as the owner of building No. 15.

The former Aachen professional boxer Klaus Gallwe is the caretaker of brothels on Antoniusstraße.

controversy

Antoniusstrasse is still characterized today by prostitutes who offer their services for sale in cobblestone windows. Due to the location of the street, in the middle of the pedestrian zone in the city center, there have been efforts for a long time to move prostitution out of the area. The erection of privacy screens at the beginning and end of the street, such as in Hamburg 's Herbertstraße , can only be carried out on one side for fire protection reasons. Under the then Mayor Jürgen Linden , the goal was formulated in 2009 to cut the street in half and only allow prostitution in part. Brothel owners defend themselves against these plans and refer, among other things, to the ever-falling crime rate in recent years.

In 2010, in addition to local politicians, an investor also tried to push back the red light district. Currently (2012) there is - with the exception of the FDP, which wants to outsource the entire brothel area - a cross-party agreement to keep the red light district in Antoniusstraße.
