Antony is a parish in Cornwall. The small coastal town is located on the up to 60 m high Antony Peninsula in the east of the Rame peninsula , about 5 km west of Torpoint . In the north the place borders on the mouth of the Lynher , in the south it reaches the English Channel on Whitesand Bay .

history

In the Domesday Book of 1086 the place is mentioned as Antone . The settlement was divided into the localities 'Antony-in-East', 'Antony St Jacob' and 'Antony-by-Rame'. Until 1819 the area of Torpoint belonged to Antony, where from 1750 a housing estate was built for the workers of the Devonport naval shipyard on the other bank of the Tamar .

Attractions

St. James Parish Church was consecrated in 1259. The tower dates from the 14th century, the nave from the 15th century. In the 19th century the church was renewed. The main attraction, however, is the Antony House, about 1.5 km northeast of the village, built at the beginning of the 18th century . The house has been owned by the National Trust since 1961 but is still the home of the Carew family .

About 2 km southwest of the village is the former coastal fortification Tregantle Fort , about 400 m west is Scraesdon Fort . The two forts were built in the 1860s as part of the Plymouth Fort Belt and were intended to prevent attacks from the Rame Peninsula on the Devonport Naval Shipyard.
