Antun Augustinčić
Antun Augustinčić (born May 4, 1900 in Klanjec in Zagorje , Austria-Hungary ; † May 10, 1979 in Zagreb , SFR Yugoslavia ) was a Yugoslav sculptor .
Life
Antun Augustinčić was on May 4, 1900, in a time in to Austria-Hungary belonging Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia , born in Klanjec. He attended elementary school in Klanjec, grammar school in Zagreb and from 1918 studied sculpture at the Zagreb Academy of Art , first with Rudolf Valdec and Robert Frangeš Mihanović , from 1922 with Ivan Meštrović . After graduating, he received a French scholarship in 1924, and Augustinčić attended the École supérieure des arts décoratifs and the Académie des Beaux-Arts until 1926 , among others in the class of Jean-Antoine Injalbert . The works of Bourdelle , Donatello , Michelangelo and Rodin exerted a great influence on him at the time.
After his return to Zagreb he participated in various graphic exhibitions: 1926 in Zagreb and 1927 in Lviv , Split and Zagreb. In 1929 he was one of the founders of the artist group "Erde" ( Croatian : Zemlja ) and was elected its deputy chairman in the same year. With Gruppe Erde he exhibited his work in 1929, 1931 and 1932 in Zagreb and in 1931 in Paris; However, separated from the group in 1933.
By participating in numerous public competitions for monuments, he intensified his work on public monuments worldwide from the 1930s. In 1940 Augustinčić became a corresponding member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (JAZU) and in 1946 professor (and later rector) at the Zagreb Art Academy. In 1949 he became a permanent member of JAZU and at that time ran a master workshop for sculpture.
In 1970 Augustinčić donated a large part of his works to his hometown Klanjec, which have been exhibited in the Antun Augustinčić Gallery since 1976. Other of his works can be found in the park of the Museum of the History of Yugoslavia , the Serbian National Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art - both in Belgrade . Augustinčić died in 1979 at the age of 79.
