Robert Frangeš-Mihanović (born October 2, 1872 in Srijemska Mitrovica , † January 12, 1940 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian sculptor . He was a pioneer of modern Croatian sculpture. He was also one of the initiators and organizers of the artistic life in Zagreb at the turn of the 20th century.

Life

Frangeš Mihanović graduated from the craft school in Zagreb in 1889. He then went to Vienna , where he studied at the arts and crafts school (1889-1894) and at the art academy (1894/95) under Otto König and Carl Kundmann . He continued his studies in Paris (1900/01), where he a. a. met with Auguste Rodin .

Frangeš-Mihanović taught at the School of Handicrafts in Zagreb (1895–1907). He taught sculpture at the local art academy. He founded the bronze foundry at the academy. He was a member of several academies: JAZU , SANU and the Prague Academy .

At the beginning of the First World War , Frangeš-Mihanović was listed as a one-year volunteer in the state of the Austro-Hungarian Army . He soon tried to be accepted as a war sculptor in the Austro-Hungarian war press headquarters . He was admitted there on September 15, 1915 and was able to pursue sculpture until the end of the war (the KPQ had him on the list of statuses until August 11, 1918). Several of his works from this period have been preserved in the collections of the Army History Museum in Vienna .

He died in Zagreb in 1940.

Works

His medals and certificates with figurative and animal motifs - Herakles the bull (1899), winery workers (1900), Turkey (1904), workers (1906) - are the starting point of Croatian medal art. He created statuettes such as Shyness (1902), Flight into Egypt (1906), The Rape of Europe (1907); Portraits such as Vatroslav Lisinski (1895); Busts such as Antun Mihanović (1908) in Klanjec and Antun and Stjepan Radic (1936) in Trebarjevo desno.

In 1897 he created the Dying Soldier, a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the 78th Šokčević Regiment in Osijek . Along with his philosophy (1897) in Zagreb, the dying soldiers are the earliest example of Impressionism in Croatian sculpture. His most monumental work is the equestrian statue of King Tomislav (created 1928–1938, installed in Zagreb in 1947). He also made cemetery statues in Varaždin (monument on the Leitner family crypt, 1906) and Mirogoj (workers on the Müller family grave, 1935). He created architectural sculptural elements on buildings in Zagreb, such as the allegorical reliefs of Philosophy, Theology, Medicine and Frustration at the State Archives.

His work includes the styles of academicism, symbolism and modernism (impressionism). In his mature phase he developed a personal style of free realism. He has also been engaged in handicrafts.
