Aphanopetalum is the only genus of the family of Aphanopetalaceae in the order of the saxifrage-like (Saxifragales).

description

The Aphanopetalum species are evergreen , climbing shrubs . The opposite leaves are short-stalked, leathery and simple. The leaf margin is smooth or serrated. The stipules are small or absent.

The flowers can stand alone or be arranged in groups in axillary, zymous inflorescences . The small, hermaphrodite, radial symmetry flowers are four-fold. There is a short flower cup ( hypanthium ). The four sepals are only briefly fused at their base; they enlarge during fruiting. There are four tiny petals , these can also be missing; both can even occur on a single plant. There are two circles with four fertile , mostly free stamens each. The pollen is tricolporate. Four carpels are a partial (quarter to half) under constant ovary grown. Each carpel contains only one ovule . There are four free pens available.

There are walnut fruits formed, in which the four sepals are clearly visible.
