The rush lily ( Aphyllanthes monspeliensis L. ), also called blue rush , is the only plant species in the genus Aphyllanthes and forms its own subfamily Aphyllanthoideae in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). It is native to the western Mediterranean .

description

The rush lily is a perennial herbaceous plant . This xerophyte forms short rhizomes as persistence organs. The simple leaves are reduced and heaped at the base of the plants.

The inflorescences are few flowers or the flowers are solitary. The hermaphroditic, radial symmetry flowers are threefold. The six identical bloom cladding sheets ( tepals ) are blue and fused to a short tube at the base. There are six stamens . The three pistils have become a top permanent ovary grown. It forms capsule fruits .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = approx. 32.

Occurrence

The rush lily is native to the western and central Mediterranean region. Its distribution area includes the countries Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Portugal, Spain, the Balearic Islands, France, Sardinia and Italy.
