The Apogonichthyini are a tribe of the cardinalfish (Apogonidae) that occurs near the coast in the Red Sea and in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa to Japan in the north, Australia in the south and east to Hawaii and French Polynesia .

features

The small fish are reddish, brownish or blackish in color and unstriped, but quite often show light or dark spots on the body. Head (“cheek” and gill cover) and body are covered with comb scales. The edge of the preoperculum is smooth or serrated. The teeth on the premaxillary , in the lower jaw and the palatal teeth are brush-shaped. The supramaxillary, a bone of the upper jaw, is missing. Six infraorbitalia (eye ring bones). The caudal fin is forked, rounded or spade-shaped. In the caudal fin skeleton there is a pair of uroneuralia and five exposed hypuralia or the hypuralia 1 + 2 and 3 + 4 have grown together. The caudal fin is supported by 17 segmented fin rays, 15 of which are branched, the upper and lower fin rays are unbranched.
