history

Based on the stylistic forms, the construction of the Apollo Fountain is dated to around 1620, an exact date is not known. Its construction would go hand in hand with the conversion of the Renthof to a knight academy (1617–1618). Other sources assume that it was built around 1600. The court architect and sculptor Wilhelm Vernukken is considered the master builder . The fountain stood in the inner courtyard of Renthof until 1872 and was originally painted in color. Musical instruments from the time of Landgrave Moritz are depicted on the fountain . The figure represents either Apollo or Orpheus .

The fountain was renovated in the 1960s with funding from the State of Hesse . Today it belongs to a dental laboratory and is again in need of renovation. The weathered fountain basin was replaced by a replica in 1991.
