Apollonas ( Greek Απόλλωνας ( m. Sg. )) Is a village on the Greek Cyclades -Insel Naxos . Apollonas is 54 kilometers by road from the town of Naxos , the main town on the island.
tourism
Since the 1980s, Apollonas has developed into a tourist destination. Apollonas is the only tourist place on Naxos that is located on the north coast. The place offers several hotels, room rentals and about ten taverns for tourists. In the village itself there is an approximately 100 meter long sandy beach. The town of Apollonas is approached by buses several times a day in summer and has a little over one hundred inhabitants.
Some Germans have settled permanently in Apollonas.
Kouros from Apollonas
The place is best known for the Kouros of Apollonas , an unfinished archaic figure from the 7th or 6th century BC. This larger-than-life, 10.7 meter high figure is located west of the village in one of the most important ancient marble quarries on the island, which is also one of the oldest quarries in Greece. A second smaller than life-sized kouros from the quarry of Apollonas was transported by Ludwig Ross to the Museum of Naxos in 1834, where it is exhibited on the terrace. In the quarry of Apollonas, traces of stone workings from ancient Greece can also be seen.
On Naxos, in addition to the Kouros from Apollonas, there are two other Kouroi near Melanes , the Kouros from Flerio in a cottage garden and a second Kouros from Flerio near the first in a quarry.
