Hammam in Apollonia (16th century) |
Apollonia ( Greek Απολλωνία ( f. Sg. )) Is a place in the municipality of Volvi in the Greek region of Central Macedonia . It is located about 1.6 kilometers south of Lake Volvi . Until January 14, 1927 the place was called Pazarouda ( Παζαρούδα ). After that it was renamed Apollonia after the ancient city of Apollonia Mygdoniorum .
In Roman times there was a station in Apollonia on the Via Egnatia . The apostle Paul of Tarsus is said to have stopped by here in 50 on his second missionary trip. He was on the journey from Philippi to Thessaloniki and was accompanied by Silas and Timothy . On the northern outskirts there is a rock near a spring, on which Paul is said to have spoken to the inhabitants of Apollonia. An evergreen plane tree , which is a listed building, gives shade to the rock. Right next to it is a small chapel dedicated to the apostle. The chapel of Agia Paraskevi is about 50 m to the northwest.
40 meters to the northeast is a hammam from the time of the vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha (1566–1575). To the south there is an Ottoman house. To the north of the village there is a forest that has been under nature protection since 2004 as part of the Koronia and Volvi Lake and Macedonian Tempe National Park .
