Apostle of Hustle is an indie rock band from Toronto , Canada . It was founded in 2001 by Andrew Whiteman.

history

Andrew Whiteman was active in several other bands, including the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir and Que Vida, before founding Apostle of Hustle. In 2001 he joined the band collective Broken Social Scene as lead guitarist . During a two-month stay with his grandmother's family in Havana , he learned to play the tres , a Cuban type of guitar with three strings. This experience already influenced him while working on Broken Social Scene's album You Forgot It in People .

Out of the desire to deal more intensively with Latin American music , he founded Apostle Of Hustle together with Julian Brown and Dean Stone. The band was planned as a quartet and initially performed in smaller bars. During these live performances, the open fourth position was filled with various musicians from the Toronto music scene, including the conga drummer Daniel Stone and Bryden Baird, who appears with Leslie Feist . The band started playing traditional Brazilian and Cuban music , as well as covers by Tom Waits , PJ Harvey and Marc Ribot .

Folkloric Feel , Apostle of Hustle's debut album, was released in summer 2004 on the Arts & Crafts label . The album was recorded at four different locations at different times. Whiteman cites the reason that he gave priority to working with Broken Social Scene at the time. The National Anthem of Nowhere followed in 2007, some of which was recorded in Whiteman's own bedroom. This album also features Liam O'Neil from The Stills , Evan Cranley and Chris Seligman from Stars and Lisa Lobsinger, who has been singing with Broken Social Scene since 2006.
