The pharmacy Zum Goldenen Löwen (also Hassack pharmacy after August Hassack ) was first mentioned in 1545 and is therefore the oldest pharmacy and the oldest existing shop in St. Pölten . When it was founded, it was a landscape pharmacy . In contrast to others, it no longer has this name today.

Building description

The building, which basically dates back to the early 16th century, was erected on an elongated, narrow parcel. Joseph Munggenast designed the baroque facade of this house, which has a striking mansard hipped roof on the front wing. This is interrupted by small dormers and connects to a gable roof . The facade is rhythmically structured by pilasters with composite capitals over a banded ground floor. In the area of the roof there is a blind storey. Grooved wall templates accentuate the edge axes. The facades in Wienerstraße and Kremsergasse are held together like a hinge by a rounded connecting piece with grooved templates. The baroque "Madonna with the Star Crown" (the original is in a window niche in the large exhibition room of the City Museum) with its canopy particularly emphasizes this concise, popularly known as the "sharp corner" edge of the building. The main facade in Kremsergasse is adorned with a stucco ornament in the front gable. In the eastern Parapetfeld the main floor of the Vienna street the sandstone coat of arms pharmacist Joseph King Dorffer is from 1609. It shows an armored arm with an ax. The exact meaning is not clear, but it is seen in connection with the high jurisdiction.

Inside

The pharmacy's sales rooms are divided into two parts, which were connected by a large wall opening after the renovation in 2005. The main room in the corner area of the house is characterized by a flat cap vault and late Biedermeier furnishings. The wall constructions have a continuous shutter element in the lower part. The visible side of the 130 drawers is made of maple wood . The sales counter with its 96 shops is made of cherry wood. A newly created passage leads to the other part of the building, which has been adapted as a sales room, which originally served as the entrance to the courtyard and has a barrel vault . There is also an antique shop element with 30 small drawers. The rest of the furniture was newly produced and is integrated into the overall ensemble. Solnhofen limestone was chosen as the flooring, which is still preserved in its original form in the back of the pharmacy. Thanks to the planning and design of the architect Monika Gentzsch, the building jumps were redesigned to be barrier-free .

Herbal pharmacy

The golden lion pharmacy has a long tradition as a herbal pharmacy. Various old recipe books and valuable writings are evidence of this. In the attic of the house there is a listed tea chamber and antique devices for drying and processing medicinal plants . Herbs also play an important role in today's pharmacy. Over 300 different drugs, also from traditional Chinese medicine , as the basis of many formulations, are always in stock. In addition, a small part of the medicinal herbs is clearly presented in a medicinal plant garden along the facade of the pharmacy. The lovingly signposted facility has existed since 1999 and has become a well-known part of city walks. It should convey the traditional knowledge about plants and their medicinal effects.
