iLife is a multimedia package from Apple with a focus on image, audio and video processing and the distribution of these media. It contains the following programs:

In the past, iLife also included the iDVD (DVD authoring), iWeb (web development) and iPhoto (image management) programs, which have since been discontinued.

The applications run on macOS , iPadOS and iOS . Older versions of iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD also ran on Mac OS 9 .

distribution

A license for the current iLife package is already installed when you buy a Macintosh computer, but it is not part of the actual operating system. It is also contained on the supplied data carrier - in addition to Xcode and the Apple Hardware Test - as bundled software . Newer program versions can be purchased, while updates are free. Since January 2009, iLife has also been available at a reduced price as a package with Mac OS X and iWork.

The programs have been available individually in the Mac App Store since early 2011 . The distribution of DVDs with the entire iLife package was then discontinued. Updates to iLife applications purchased from the Mac App Store are available free of charge.

Since September 1, 2013 (for GarageBand September 1, 2014) the programs iMovie and GarageBand have been preinstalled free of charge on new macOS and iOS devices.

integration

A special feature of this software package is the integration of the individual programs. For example, iTunes recordings, GarageBand compositions, iPhoto galleries, and iMovie videos can be imported into iDVD to create a DVD . Photos from iPhoto can be inserted into a film cut with iMovie and published with iWeb, which has been set to music with music from the iTunes library. In addition, the photo, music and video libraries can be used in other applications, for example iWork or Microsoft Office have an interface to iLife.
