Apygardos teismas

Apygardos teismas (German district court ) is the entrance and second instance of ordinary jurisdiction in Lithuania . The second instance for the decisions of the Lithuanian district courts is the Lithuanian Court of Appeal . The largest Apygardos teismas is the Vilnius District Court with 56 judges , 115 state officials and 78 employees. As the court of first instance, the Vilnius District Court has exclusive jurisdiction over certain civil matters (trademark law, licensing law and others).

Apygardos teismas already existed in the 18th century of the Republic of Both Nations . Such courts were established by law by the Seimas . In the Lithuanian territory of the Russian Empire , there were also district courts in Vilnius and Kaunas , in the capitals of the Russian gubernia . Apygardos teismas also existed after the declaration of Lithuanian independence. The Lithuanian district courts were dissolved after the Soviet occupation. Thereafter there were no comparable district courts in Soviet Lithuania . The Lithuanian district courts were only re-established in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda Šiauliai and Panevėžys after the regaining of Lithuanian independence . The district courts in the territory of the corresponding district courts were subordinated to each district court.
