Ara Gallant (* 1932 in New York City as Ira Gallantz , † 1990 in Las Vegas ) was an American style- setting stylist and star photographer from the late 1960s to the early 1990s.

Ara Gallant was in 1932 in New York's Bronx as Ira Gallantz born. He supposedly changed his name to give it a more exotic sound. Gallant first worked as a hair stylist, for example for the photographer Richard Avedon . He gave importance to hair in photography in the 1960s. He is said to have been the first paid hairstylist at Vogue magazine , and his technique of recording hair flying in the artificial wind was later copied a lot. In the further he discovered photography himself. He caused a stir for the first time with pictures by Veruschka and the well-known work Flying Hair from 1966, for which Gallant portrayed the actress Twiggy with a wild mane of free, long and lush hair. In the following years he worked a. a. for Vogue, Rolling Stone , Playboy and also for Andy Warhol's interview . He shot numerous other stars such as Catherine Deneuve , Dustin Hoffman , Mick Jagger , Lauren Hutton and Jack Nicholson with whom he was good friends.

Gallant was known for his drug use, and in 1990 he committed suicide in a Las Vegas hotel room.
