The Caucasian rockcress ( Arabis caucasica Willd .; Syn .: Arabis alpina subsp. Caucasica (Willd.) Briq. ) Is a species of the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae).

description

The Caucasian rockcress is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. It forms aboveground runners. The stem leaves and basal leaves are weakly serrated. They have two to five short teeth on each side and are tomentose with gray, star-haired hair. The petals are 11 to 14 millimeters long and suddenly contract into the nail.

The flowering period extends from March to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

The Caucasian rockcress occurs from North Africa and Southern Europe to Central Asia . The species grows in alpine rock corridors.

use

The Caucasian rockcress is widely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens , as a ground cover and as a cut flower. It has been in culture since the early 19th century. The variety 'Plena' has double flowers, 'Sulphurea' has sulfur yellow flowers and 'Variegata' has yellow piebald flowers.
