The Araeoscelidia are a small group of extinct diapsid reptiles . They lived from the Upper Carboniferous to the Lower Permian , were the first diapsids and possibly the sister group of all later diapsids. Some had a euryapsid skull and only one upper skull window ( araeoscelis ), but the jugale (cheekbone) was already furrowed.

features

Their outward appearance was graceful and lizard-like. The neck of some shapes was elongated. The skull was lightly built, the muzzle short. The palate was primitive and richly toothed. The few teeth that sat on the edges of the jaw were large and cylindrical. There was no ear slit. The tail was long, the legs slender with five toes. The front legs were only slightly shorter than the rear legs. The animals had six to seven elongated cervical vertebrae , about 25 to 31 presacral vertebrae, and only two pelvic vertebrae. The shoulder girdle was shifted backwards in Petrolacosaurus .
