Arafura basin

The Arafura Basin ( English Arafura Basin ) is a large sedimentary basin in the north of Australia . The basin extends in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory to the coastline and undersea to western New Guinea .

The basin was formed from the Neoproterozoic to Carboniferous 1000 to 298 million years ago. This sedimentary basin is partially covered by the McArthur Basin , Money Shoal Basin and Pine Creek Orogenous . The thickness of the rock layers , which consist of dolomite , limestone , sandstone , siltstone , basalt and coal is up to 5 km.

Nine oil wells have been developed in the region and oil and gas deposits are being explored off the coast .
