Aragorn was an English New Wave of British Heavy Metal band from Macclesfield that was formed in 1978 and split up in 1983.

history

The band was formed in August 1978 and consisted of guitarist Jon Hull, singer Chris Dunne, drummer Chris Dadson and bassist Dale Lee. For the next two years, the group could hardly attract any attention. The band name is borrowed from a character from Tolkien's world . In late 1979 Lee and Dadson left the band. In April 1980 Mike Ellis joined the line-up as the new drummer. The group then reached a contract with Neat Records , where they were one of the first artists to be signed by this label. Then the single Black Ice was recorded, with the song Noonday as the B-side. The demo recordings for this took place on September 25, 1980 in the Smile Studios in Manchester , the recordings for the actual single on November 24, 1980 in the Impulse Studios in Wallsend . Since no suitable bass player had been found at this point in time, Dale Lee was again represented as a guest bass player for the recording of the single. Noonday was also featured on the Neat Records sampler Lead Weight a few months later . Shortly afterwards, a new bass player joined the line-up with Chris White. At the time, the group played appearances with Iron Maiden , Raven , White Spirit , Angel Witch , Lionheart , Saxon , Trust and Spider, among others . In April 1981, a second guitarist was added with Andy Halliwell, before material was recorded for a second single, Hungry for Your Love , which was not officially released. Due to the unstable line-up, further publications for the band did not make sense. In September 1981 the line-up had shrunk to a trio consisting of Hull, White and Dunne while they were looking for a suitable bassist. Musicians named Lionel Murz, Tony Backhouse and Graham Timson briefly took over this position. In April 1982 the group seemed to have found a suitable permanent bassist in Nigel Stollof. In May 1982, the group began rehearsing for an album, which they continued in October. In the same month she also recorded a demo. The actual album recordings began on November 6th, before they ended on January 30th, 1983. Due to financial problems and the lack of support from a label, the album was not released. Instead, the band broke up in July 1983. The group's last appearance was on April 30, 1983.

Mike Ellis came then briefly A II Z in order there, Simon Wright to replace. Hull played in the band Touched , Halliwell joined Tröjan and Dadson could be heard in Chateaux . Hull also worked as a sound engineer . Years later, Ellis read an issue of Classic Rock magazine that contained an ad with the latest Sanctuary Records releases . The latest CDs included the Neat Records sampler The Flame Burns On, which includes Black Ice . Ellis then researched whether there was still interest in the band. Then he came across a website by Phil Lentz from the USA , which contained the recordings for the second single. Since Ellis had never had a copy of it himself, he contacted Lentz, who sent him a copy. In return, Ellis sent him a copy of the unreleased album as well as old demo and test recordings. Lentz then decided that the recordings could still be of interest to many fans. In 2003, the compilation Noonday - The Aragorn Anthology appeared on Neat Records . This contains the three songs that were intended for the single Hungry for Your Love , the previously unreleased album and two demos from 1980 and 1982 respectively. The sound carrier also includes a version of Golden Earrings Radar Love .

style

According to Malc Macmillan in The NWOBHM Encyclopedia , the single music of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal can be heard in the medium speed range, comparable to Sacred Alien or Traxx, but less technically demanding or creative. The International Encyclopedia of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal describes the music as simple heavy metal . Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic felt that the single was one of the best unique in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and that the raw, lively sound made it a good example of the do-it-yourself philosophy of the NWoBHM.
