Arang is a city in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .
The city is part of the Raipur district . Arang has municipal council status . The city is divided into 15 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census, it had 19,091 inhabitants, of whom 9,651 were men and 9,440 were women . The literacy rate in 2011 was 80.4% and thus above the national average. Hindus make up the majority of the city's population with a share of around 96%. Muslims form a minority with a share of around 4%.
Arang is an ancient city that was once ruled by the Rajputs of the Haihaiyavansi dynasty . It is famous for its many Jain and Hindu temples, which date from the 11th and 12th centuries. Archaeological finds show that the city had an ancient history as a center of Hindu and Jain beliefs. Arang is also mentioned in the Hindu epic Mahabharata .
The economy is mainly based on the processing of agricultural and forestry products. Religious tourism also plays a role.
