Max Moisel
Max Moisel (born April 26, 1869 in Berlin ; † 1920 ) was a German cartographer who became known for maps of the German colonies .
Life
Moisel joined Dietrich Reimer's cartographic institute on April 1, 1888 , headed by Richard and Heinrich Kiepert , and trained as a cartographer. From around 1892 he dealt in particular with colonial cartography and was co-editor of the Small German Colonial Atlas in 1895 . In 1899 he and his colleague Paul Sprigade took over the establishment and subsequent management of the Colonial Cartographic Institute . Like the cartographic institute (since 1891), this facility was also part of Ernst Vohsen's company . The upkeep was at the expense of the Reich Colonial Office . At the beginning of the First World War she employed around 60 cartographers and draftsmen. Moisel specialized in mapping the German colony of Cameroon . In 1907 and 1908 he went on a six-month study trip from the coast of Cameroon to the grassy highlands of Central Cameroon and to Foumban .
In addition to his management activities at the Colonial Cartographic Institute , Moisel was a member of the Advisory Board of the Society for Geography in Berlin and on the board of the Berlin Department of the German Colonial Society . He prepared colonial officials and officers of the protection force for expeditions by instructing them in the technique of route mapping. From 1909 he also gave part-time lessons at the Berlin Seminar for Oriental Languages . After the dissolution of the Colonial Cartographic Institute on April 1, 1920, Moisel was employed as an unskilled worker in the Reich Ministry for Reconstruction , but died that same year.
