The Tierpark Arche Warder is a zoo and landscape park on the Autobahn 7 in the municipality of Warder near Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein . The Arche Warder is Europe's largest zoo for rare and endangered domestic and farm animals. Around 1200 animals from 81 races and 7 wild animal species (parent forms) live on 40 hectares of parkland and 70 hectares of agricultural leased land. Arche Warder is a recognized nature experience area in Schleswig-Holstein. In 2018 the park was recognized as an official project of the UN Decade for Biodiversity .
The sponsor is the Arche Warder association, which was founded in 2003 and aims to preserve and protect endangered domestic and farm animal breeds with the help of a park. The park was taken over in the same year with the help of the environmental protection organization Greenpeace (after the founder's bankruptcy) and reopened in May 2004. Sausage delicacies from the zoo are offered in a farm shop. The wildlife can be experienced overnight in rustic huts. There are also two holiday apartments.
history
Jürgen Güntherschulze, zoologist, began looking after rare breeds of domestic animals on a private initiative in 1988. In the Holstein community of Warder, he had acquired a former gravel quarry area, 40 hectares in size. On May 1, 1991 he officially opened the "Warder Zoo for rare and endangered domestic animal breeds", which at the end of 1993 looked after around 1000 animals from 130 breeds. It was the largest such institution in Europe. In 1997 Güntherschulze received the newly created "Academy Award for Rural Areas", endowed with 5000 DM. Reason: The old breeds preserve valuable genetic material as a breeding reserve. This year it employed ten people and counted 70,000 visitors; but only after 100,000 paying guests would the zoo have left the deficit.
The year 1999 brought 65,000 visitors to 1,500 animals from 150 races: the private zoo existed for ten years. In February 2002 the facility was to be converted into "HausTierPark Warder GmbH", but had to file for bankruptcy in May. In November it was taken over by the new “Tierpark Warder” sponsoring association; the management passed to Dieter Kettenburg. They wanted to shrink the park from 40 to 25 hectares; a quarter of the animal population was to be sold. "Greenpeace" joined this association in July 2003 as a cooperation partner and finally acquired the zoo for around 500,000 euros. 250,000 euros were to be invested from funds from the Bingo Environment Foundation . The new sponsoring association, headed by Heinz Laing at the time, was now called "Arche Warder". After extensive construction work, the center for old domestic and farm animal breeds reopened on May 1st, 2004.
aims
- Protection through breeding:
Through targeted breeding programs, the valuable old breeds are to be preserved, the stocks increased and thus a contribution made to both ecological and conventional agriculture.
- Protection through the establishment of satellite stations:
In this way, Warder's Ark guarantees protection against disease spreads and the possibility of increasing the gene pool and integrating the animals into agricultural use.
- Protection through sophisticated educational offers:
The zoo visitor concept focuses on the direct human-animal encounter. This makes the Arche Warder particularly attractive for families and children, because animals can be touched, petted and fed.
- Protection through networking with national and international institutions
- Protection through research:
Eleven research projects are currently being carried out on the physiological peculiarities of old domestic and farm animal breeds.
Duration
The stock includes almost 1200 animals whose races are acutely threatened with extinction (extract from the stock list):
- Holstein cattle (7 animals in Warder, 2650 animals worldwide)
- Sortbroget pig also bell pig (2 animals in Warder, 200 animals worldwide)
- Buntes Bentheimer Schwein (4 animals in Warder, 292 animals in the herdbook)
- Houtland sheep (24 animals in Warder, 200 animals worldwide)
