Archibald Howie
Archibald "Archie" Howie (born March 8, 1934 ) is a British physicist . He is known for his fundamental work on transmission electron microscopy .
Howie attended Kirkcaldy High School and the University of Edinburgh . He received the Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge , where he gradually got a permanent position. He has been a Fellow of Churchill College since its inception and President of the Senior Combination Room (SCR) until 2010.
In 1965 he published the work Electron Microscopy of Thin Crystals with Peter B. Hirsch , MJ Whelan , Pashley and Nicholson.
Howie was the head of the Cavendish Laboratory from 1989 to 1997 .
