Archibald Manuel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archibald Manuel (* 1901 , † 10. October 1976 ) was a Scottish politician of the Labor Party . He is the namesake of Manuel Avenue in the Scottish city of Beith .

Political career

In the general election in 1950 , Manuel ran for the Labor Party in the newly created constituency of Central Ayrshire . He was able to prevail against his rivals WR Milligan from the Unionist Party and the liberal C. Jack Coleman and moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . Although Milligan was able to book a higher share of the vote in the following general election in 1951 , Manuel narrowly defended his mandate. It was not until the general election in 1955 that he had to surrender to the unionist Douglas Spencer-Nairn with a difference of only 167 votes . Despite this, the Labor Party put him up again for Central Ayrshire in the 1959 general election . With a slight increase in votes, Manuel regained his mandate and defended it in the following parliamentary elections in 1964 and 1966 . At the general election in 1970 Manuel has not raced for more. His next party colleague David Lambie held the constituency for the Labor Party.
