Arcos is a Portuguese municipality ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Estremoz with 1152 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Finds testify to a prehistoric settlement. Today's village was first mentioned in the 14th century, in the time of the king's reign D.João I . In the 16th century Arcos became an independent municipality.
Since the local elections in Portugal in 2009, Arcos has not been governed by one of the major parties, but by the MIPA - Mais independência por Arcos ( Portuguese for: More independence for Arcos).
Culture and sights
The manor house Quinta de Valadares (also Palacete de Valadares ) dates from the 19th century and is a listed building.
The parish church Igreja Paroquial de Santo António , partially lined with azulejos, dates from the 16th century and shows Manueline and Baroque elements.
The lake Lagoa das Espadas (German: Sword Lake ) is a regional curiosity. It dries up in summer and fills up with water every year from autumn.
