Ardnamurchan Distillery is the westernmost whiskey distillery in Scotland . It is located in Glenbeg on the Ardnamurchan peninsula in the Highlands . It is owned by Adelphi Distillery Ltd. who also works as an independent bottler .

prehistory

The Loch Katrine Adelphi Distillery was founded in 1826 by Charles and David Gray in Glasgow in the Lowlands on the banks of the Clyde and the first whiskey was distilled.

In 1880 Archibald Walker became the owner of the still and invested considerable funds. At that time he owned two distilleries in Liverpool and Limerick . In 1886 the still was the largest still in Scotland with over 2 million liters.

In 1903 the Distillers Company (now Diageo ) took over the still . The Great Gorbals Disaster of 1906 caused a washback to burst into an alcohol flood and killed one person. Production of malt whiskey ceased in 1907, but grain whiskey continued to be produced until 1932. In 1968 the dismantling of the distillery began, which was fully implemented in 1971.

In 1993, Jamie Walker, Archibald Walker's great-grandson, founded the independent bottler Adelphi. For reasons of age, he sold the company to Keith Falconer and Donald Houston in 2003. From 2007 they planned to set up their own distillery near the headquarters in Glenborrodale Castle.

History of the Ardnamurchan Distillery

In 2012 Adelphi received the building permit for what is now the Ardnamurchan Distillery.

The construction of the distillery was a challenge. The access roads are sometimes very narrow. So the Mash tun ( mash tun ) could only be planned as large as the narrowest parts of the street would allow.

Princess Anne personally bottled the first barrel of the distillery on July 25, 2014.

production

Peated and unpeated whiskey are produced in equal quantities. The fermentation time is 72 hours.

Four wooden wash backs (fermentation vats) were previously used in France to produce cognac . There are also 3 additional steel wash backs .

The principle applies to the still that the whiskey is a natural product and this should also be reflected in the production. The electricity for production and the cooling water are obtained from a hydropower generator from the nearby river. A biomass boiler, heated with wood chips from local production, generates the heat to operate the stills. The by-products and leftovers from whiskey production are used as animal feed or fertilizer in the region.

The first barrels were bottled in 2014. Ardnamurchan plans to store at least 7 years prior to sale.

Sightseeing

The still can be visited and there is a visitor center. Guided tours are offered every hour.
