history

Ardrossan's roots go back to 1140. The town's importance grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the Firth of Clyde became very important for shipping in terms of coal and steel transports. From 1842 to the end of the 1950s, shipbuilding was carried out in Ardrossan by the Ardrossan Shipbuilding Company , and smaller fishing vessels were even built into the 1980s. Ardrossan was one of the last towns to become a free town in 1846 , but lost that status in 1974 when Scotland was divided into nine regions , where Ardrossan Strathclyde fell to, but lost.

traffic

Ardrossan has three train stations, the Ardrossan South Beach , in the center of the city Ardrossan Town and in the port the Ardrossan Harbor station, which was closed in 1968 and reopened in 1987 . All three stations are on the Ayrshire Coast Line coming from Glasgow , which splits at South Beach station and one branch leads into the city, while the other branch continues to Largs .

Ardrossan is connected to the A78 and A737 by road.

The port from which the ferry to Brodick leaves on the island of Arran and which is also home to a marina is important for the place .
