Arend van der Wel (born March 28, 1933 in Amsterdam , † September 16, 2013 in Denekamp ) was a Dutch football player .

Athletic career

Van der Wel, who came from the youth of De Volewijckers and whose father played for Blauw Wit Amsterdam and later worked as a coach, switched to Ajax Amsterdam as a youth player and was promoted to the club's competition team in 1950. Five years later he moved to the Enschede sports club , which under Hennie Möring wanted to switch to professional football as soon as possible and had signed players like Abe Lenstra , Joop Odenthal and Gerrit Voges . Until 1964 van der Wel played 220 competitive games for the club, which was a founding member of the Eredivisie in 1956 . In 1958 he was runner-up with the club when the championship was determined in a - with 0: 1 lost - play off because of the tie with DOS Utrecht .

After a year at SC Cambuur , he played two seasons from 1965 at HVV Tubantia and then at DOS '19 . There he moved to the coaching bench after retiring in 1969. He later returned to his former club, which has now been renamed Twente Enschede , and worked in particular as a coach for the second team.

For his achievements van der Wel received the Order of Orange-Nassau with the rank of knight.

In the last years of his life, van der Wel suffered from Parkinson's disease . He died on September 15, 2013.
