Johannes Bernardus "Joop" Odenthal (born March 13, 1924 in Haarlem , † January 19, 2005 in Neede ) was a Dutch baseball and soccer player .

Career

Born in Haarlem, he played in his hometown in the 1940s for FC EDO in both the football team and, from 1946, in the baseball team. He played with the baseball players in the top division and was appointed to the national team twice in 1948 and 1949, each against Belgium .

His move to local rivals and soccer champions of 1946 HFC in 1949 resented many EDO supporters, but it brought him major soccer successes. The selection committee of the KNVB now also became aware of the defender . On April 15, 1951, he was in the Dutch squad for the first time in the international match against Belgium , but initially only sat on the bench. After Oranje lost 3-2 to Norway in June 1951, Bondscoach Jaap van der Leck sent in the next game on October 27, 1951 against Finland three debutants in defense on the pitch; in addition to Odenthal, these were Piet Bakers and Bram Wiertz . The game ended 4: 4, and in the next match against Belgium the defense conceded seven goals at 6: 7; Nevertheless, Odenthal secured a regular place in the squad and was also in the Dutch team, which lost 5-1 to Brazil at the 1952 Olympics in Turku . By October 1954, he made twelve missions in the orange jersey in three years. At the end of 1954 he moved to SC Enschede , where he played together with the Frisian football legend Abe Lenstra . On May 10, 1956, Odenthal came back to the Elftal for the sports club under bond coach Max Merkel ; his thirteenth international match against Ireland - a 4-1 defeat in Rotterdam - was also his last. He also played for Tubantia and after his active career became a football and baseball coach at the Hengeloer Verein Achilles '12 .

Odenthal was one of three players who were used in both the baseball and football selection of the Netherlands. Next to him these were Henk Schijvenaar and Cor Wilders .
