#Selfie ( stylized as #SELFIE ) is a song of the American DJ - duo The Chainsmokers . It was released on January 28, 2014 and sold 865,000 copies in the United States through June 2014. In August 2014, #Selfie was awarded a platinum record by the Recording Industry Association of America .

background

The word selfie was ubiquitous in 2013 and the Oxford English Dictionary chose it as the word of the year. As a result, the two DJs Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, who together make up the music duo The Chainsmokers, noticed the word, decided to write a song about it and recorded a demo in which a female club-goer gives a monologue on how to be good Photographed selfies. The duo got their inspiration for this from the partying women they met on their night outings in New York City . According to the duo, #Selfie was originally written for fun, but Steve Aoki's label Dim Mak Records noticed the song and released it.

Musical and content

#Selfie is, except for the spoken stanzas, an instrumental electro house song. The female voice in the song comes from Alexis Killacam, a close friend of the Chainsmokers. The lyrics of #Selfie deal with a narcissistic young woman in a club who is presumably speaking to her friends in a monologue. She talks about taking selfies and uploading them to her Instagram account, and criticizes other people in this club and their outfit . She also talks about a man named Jason, who she seems to have a crush on. The monologues each end with the sentence “Let me take a selfie”. The lyrics contain some cultural references, for example to Instagram or Lana Del Rey's song Summertime Sadness .

Reviews

#Selfie received mostly negative ratings. The Süddeutsche Zeitung called the song a “beautiful summer hit,” but criticized the similarity to We No Speak Americano . Chicago Reader's Miley Raymer described the song as "junk" and "unimaginative," and criticized that the song was only there to promote the internet selfie phenomenon. Natasha Shankar from SheKnows Media called #Selfie a "standard club song".

Music video

Together with the internet marketing company TheAudience, the Chainsmokers developed a social media concept for the song. They launched a call for selfies to be included in the music video. To do this, they created an instruction video on YouTube. 2000 images were received within a week. In addition to the selected fan snapshots, self-recordings by Steve Aoki , A-Trak , Snoop Dogg , Ian Somerhalder and David Hasselhoff could also be seen in the video. The plot of the video is reflected in the content of the song, a young woman stands next to her friend in front of a mirror in a club, holds a monologue and takes selfies. The woman in the video is not played by Alexis Killacam, who recorded the text, but by the US model Lindsey Diane. Currently (as of June 2017) the video has been viewed over 500 million times on YouTube .
