Arenocoris waltlii is a bug from the family of the border bugs (Coreidae).
features
The bugs are 7.2 to 8.0 millimeters long. They are very variable in their coloration and are very similar to the much more common Arenocoris fallenii . It can be distinguished from this species by the absence of the two rows of pale thorns on the pronotum , which in the similar species form a V open to the rear. In addition, the third section of the antennae has slightly thickened side edges towards the front. In Arenocoris fallenii the third antennae has parallel lateral edges.
distribution and habitat
The species is particularly widespread in the Mediterranean area . Their distribution extends to southern Western and Central Europe and east across Asia Minor to the Caucasus and the Middle East. In Germany the species has only been proven by a few records, mainly from sandy areas of the Upper Rhine Plain and in the Rhine-Main area in the south-west. The species has not yet been proven beyond doubt in Austria. The species, which has always been rare there, was considered extinct for a long time in Great Britain, but was rediscovered in 2011. As with Arenocoris fallenii, dry, sandy habitats are settled.
Way of life
The way of life is similar to that of Arenocoris fallenii . The bugs also feed on the common heron beak ( Erodium cicutarium ).
