FC Arieșul Turda is a Romanian football club from Turda that has been playing in the third Romanian football league, Liga III , since 2012 . He won the Romanian Cup in 1961 , but has never played in the highest Romanian football league, Liga 1 .

history

Arieșul Turda was founded in 1922 under the name Muncitorul Turda ( Muncitor is the Romanian word for worker ). In the 1920s, the club failed to qualify for the finals of the Romanian football championship because it could not prevail against the regional competitors from Victoria and Universitatea Cluj . When the professional league Divizia A was founded in 1932 , Muncitorul was therefore not there. It was not until 1937 that the association managed to qualify for the supraregional level for the first time. In the north group of the newly founded Divizia C , however, it was only enough for last place, in the following season the club withdrew from play in the middle of the season.

Since Divizia C was not held regularly in the post-war period, the club did not return to the national championships until 20 years later under the new name Flamura Turda , which it had adopted in 1950. After the ascent, he changed his name to Arieșul Turda - named after the Arieș River on which Turda lies. In the 1961/62 season, Ariesul achieved the greatest success in the club's history. Meanwhile, playing in the second-class Divizia B , the club under coach Ștefan Wetzer was able to reach the Romanian cup final and beat Rapid Bucharest 2-1 there. Since the game had only taken place in November 1961, Arieșul could not take part in the European Cup Winners' Cup. In the same season, the club also achieved the best result in league operations with sixth place.

The club could not build on the successes. Arieșul experienced turbulent times in the second half of the 1960s. After relegation from Divizia B in 1964 and the immediate resurgence, the club was passed down and found itself in the fourth division in the 1967/68 season. After the immediate return to Divizia C, Arieșul played again in the second highest division from 1973 to 1977. In 1975 the club changed its name to Sticla Arieșul Turda . At the beginning of the 1980s he made several unsuccessful attempts to return to Divizia B, but each failed just barely. After the rise in 1984, turbulent years followed. The immediate relegation and resurgence in 1987 followed from 1990 to 1991 and from 1992 to 1994 renewed times in the regional leagues. Since then, the club's development has been steadily increasing. If he initially fought to stay in the league, he was able to intervene in the fight for promotion in the following years. Since 1999 the club has been called Arieșul Turda again .

In 2007 finally managed to return to the second highest division under coach Victor Roşca . After seven days of the 2006/07 season he was replaced by Alexandru Nistor , who, however, did not have a valid coaching license. In order to avoid an association penalty, Mircea Bolba , the previous coach of Talna Oraşu Nou in League IV , was then signed on November 8, 2007 . In January 2008, Victor Roşca returned as head coach. In June 2008 Alexandru Pelici was hired as a coach. After four defeats in the first four championship games of the Liga II 2009/10 and the elimination in the Cupa României 2009/10 Pelici announced his retirement on September 5, 2009. The successor to the bottom of the table was Marin Tudorache on September 7, 2009 , who was dismissed on April 12, 2010 after a weak start in the second half of the season. In the last ten games of the season, the club was looked after by Dorel Mureşan , with whom the tenth place in the table was reached. For the away game on June 11, 2010 at CS Otopeni , Arieşul was no longer allowed to play on the last day of the game, as an installment of the transfer fee for Rareş Forika had not been transferred to Tricolorul Breaza on time. After the end of the season, coach Mureșan gave way to the previous goalkeeping coach Marcel Rusu , who remained with the club as goalkeeping coach when he was replaced on October 19, 2010 by Florin Fabian as head coach. Fabian was released on September 12, 2011 and replaced by George Ciorceri two days later .

After the end of the first half of the 2011/12 season , Ariesul was last in the table and was about to withdraw from the championship, as players and youth coaches had not received any salaries for several months.
