Aria Folger

Arie Folger (born 1974 in Antwerp , Belgium ) was Chief Rabbi of Vienna between July 2016 and June 2019 . Before that he was rabbi of Basel and later of Munich .

Life

Arie Folger was born in Belgium in 1974. His father was a survivor of the Shoah and his mother was born in Marrakech .

Folger completed a rabbinical degree in Wilrijk, Belgium, Gateshead , England, Jerusalem and New York, among others . He received an MBA from the Stern School of Business at New York University .

From 2003 to 2008, Folger was rabbi of the Basel Israelite community . He then worked as Publications Director for the American Rabbis Association. In September 2011 he became the community rabbi of the Israelite Community in Munich and Upper Bavaria . From 2013 to 2015 he was a member of the rabbinate of the Jewish community in Frankfurt am Main and head of the kashrut department there. At the same time he was the community rabbi of the Jewish community in Karlsruhe .

According to the decision of the board of directors of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien in December 2015, he became Chief Rabbi in Vienna from June 1, 2016 and thus successor to Paul Chaim Eisenberg . On June 24, 2019, the IKG announced that Folger's term of office as Chief Rabbi in Vienna had ended by mutual agreement. In February 2020, Jaron Engelmayer was appointed as his successor as Vienna Chief Rabbi from August 2020.

Folger is a member of the Orthodox Rabbinical Conference of Germany, was an officer in the American Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) and a member of the Standing Committee of the Conference of European Rabbis . On August 31, 2017, as part of an international Orthodox rabbinical delegation, he presented to Pope Francis the document Between Jerusalem and Rome, which was signed by representatives of the European Rabbinical Conference (CER), the American Rabbinical Association (RCA) and the Chief Rabbinate of the State of Israel.

Arie Folger is married and has seven children.
