Paul Chaim Eisenberg (born June 26, 1950 in Vienna ) was Chief Rabbi of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Vienna from 1983 to June 2016 .

Life

Paul Chaim Eisenberg comes from a rabbi family. He was an active member of the Bne Akiwa and took on tasks in the youth sector. He studied mathematics and statistics for two semesters at the University of Vienna . He then completed a rabbinical degree in Jerusalem . After the death of his father Akiba Eisenberg in 1983, he took over the office of Chief Rabbi of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Vienna. Since 1988 Eisenberg has also been Chief Rabbi of the Federal Association of Israelite Religious Communities in Austria .

In addition to his function as chief rabbi, he also appeared again and again as a singer, for example at the annual KlezMore Festival and the cantor's concert in Vienna. In 2001 he brought out a CD with Yiddish songs and Hasidic tunes and stories under the title As der Rebbe laughs in collaboration with ORF .

On July 1, 2016, Arie Folger succeeded him as Chief Rabbi in Vienna.
