Aristide Bruant , fully Louis Armand Aristide Bruant (born May 6, 1851 in Courtenay (Loiret) , † February 10, 1925 in Paris ) was a French cabaret singer, writer, comedian and nightclub owner who was known through the posters of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec , on which he can be seen as a man in a red scarf and black coat, became very famous.

His life

Aristide Bruant, painted by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

After the death of his father, Bruant left his hometown at the age of fifteen to find a job. His way led him to the Parisian bohemian district of Montmartre , where he preferred to stay in the working class bistros, where he was then given the opportunity to demonstrate his musical talent. Although he came from a middle-class family, he soon adopted the coarse language that was spoken in his favorite places and also used it in songs that tell of the struggles of the poor.

His career

Bruant began performing in café concerts and developed a vocal and comedy performance that led to contractual appearances at the famous Le Chat Noir club . Dressed in a red sweater, a black velvet jacket, high boots and a long red scarf, he soon became a star of Montmartre under the stage name Aristide Bruant. When Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec began appearing in cabarets and clubs, Bruant became one of the first to befriend the painter.

In 1885 Bruant opened his own club on Montmartre, which he called Le Mirliton (the flute). It was the former premises of the first Le Chat Noir , a legendary club on 84 Boulevard Rochechouart (today a plaque commemorates it). The Chat Noir moved to 12 Rue Victor-Masse due to tangible disputes with the local criminal scene, and Bruant took over the old eatery. Although he hired other artists there, he also gave his own singing performances. The entertainment master was notorious for his insults to the mostly bourgeois audience, for whom these events were nevertheless a great attraction.

Aristide Bruant died in Paris and was buried in the Subligny cemetery.
