Armand Thiéry

Armand Auguste Ferdinand Thiéry (born August 6, 1868 in Gentbrugge , East Flanders , Belgium , † January 12, 1955 in Leuven ) was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest , theologian , psychologist , engineer and professor .

Life

From 1886 he studied law as well as physics and mathematics at the Catholic University of Leuven and received his doctorate in law as well as physics and mathematics . On the advice of Désiré-Joseph Mercier , Thiéry studied experimental psychology from 1892 at the University of Bonn and from 1893 with Wilhelm Wundt at the University of Leipzig . In Bonn he became a member of the Catholic student union KDStV Bavaria Bonn in the CV on May 15, 1892 . In 1896 he was the founder of KAV Lovania Löwen .

In 1895 he returned to Leuven and became a professor at the Philosophical Institute of the University of Leuven ( Leo XIII Seminar ), which was founded in 1895 by Cardinal Mercier. He became a recognized expert on Thomism . For his scientific work he and his professor colleague Simon Deploige received an honorary doctorate. In 1897 and 1900, Thiéry was in private audience with Pope Leo XIII. receive. Armand Thiéry was ordained a priest on December 31, 1896 .

In 1895 he also received a reputation as a professor, from 1895 to 1914 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Louvain and taught on experimental psychology. From 1909 he was assisted by Albert Michotte , who also succeeded him after his retirement in 1939 and founded the Löwener Schule .

He was involved in philosophical student circles. Since 1895 he was a member of the Philosophical Society of Leuven.

During the First World War , Thiéry was able to save part of the historic city center of Leuven from arson as a result of German retaliation. During the Second World War , the retired university professor, mystic and religious priest Thiéry saved the lives of several Jews and other victims of Nazi persecution by helping them to hide and flee. He also hid Jews in his monastery in Heverlee near Leuven . For saving Jewish life, at the instigation of the Jewess Grunia Schicharewitch, whom he rescued, he was posthumously awarded the “ Righteous Among the Nations ” award by Jad waSchem and the State of Israel in 1980 .
