The army air forces ( ArFK ) were a branch of the land forces of the National People's Army of the GDR .

history

In the mid-1970s, the leadership of the GDR decided to set up a combat helicopter regiment. In the early 1980s, the United High Command of the Warsaw Pact called for further strengthening of the support of the combat units of the land forces.

The air forces of the National People's Army formed the two combat helicopter squadrons (KHG) 57 and 67 from parts of the helicopter squadron 34 and the following reclassifications: The KHG-57 (1981: helicopter squadron 54 / HG-54) had been with Mil Mi-8 T / TB since 1976 and equipped with Mil Mi-24 D since 1978 . The name of the Prussian officer " Adolf von Lützow " was given on March 1, 1980. The KHG-67 (formerly also KHG-64) was initially equipped with Mi-8T / TB and since 1982 with Mi-24D. On September 29, 1984, the squadron was given the name of the Prussian officer " Ferdinand von Schill ".

In 1984 the subordination of the attack helicopter squadrons changed from the LSK / LV to the land forces, which thus received a new type of weapon. The KHG-57 was assigned to Military District V on March 1, 1984 , and the KHG-67 to Military District III on November 1, 1984 . On December 1, 1986, the squadrons were renamed according to their organizational allocation from KHG-57 to KHG-5 and from KHG-67 to KHG-3.

After the dissolution of the NVA, the Bundeswehr took over the associations of the army aviation forces. On April 1, 1991 Army Aviation Squadrons 70 (KHG-3), 80 (KHG-5) and East were set up. The Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 61 was commissioned to test the helicopters.

Of the helicopters used in the NVA, the Mil Mi-2 were no longer used in the Bundeswehr. The army aviation separated the Mi-24 until 1993 and the Mi-8 until 1994.
