Armin Gotthard Uhlmann (born February 19, 1930 in Chemnitz ) is a German theoretical physicist and professor emeritus at the University of Leipzig .

Life

After graduating from high school, Armin Uhlmann studied mathematics and physics at the University of Leipzig from 1949 to 1954 . His scientific teachers were Herbert Beckert and Erich Kähler . In 1957, he was with a thesis on Normalized Divisorfunktionen at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Leipzig in Kahler in mathematics doctorate and in 1960 with the signature of the energy period-manifold over the term with a curved in theoretical physics habilitation .

After an assistantship at the University of Jena from 1958 to 1960, he then worked at the University of Leipzig until his retirement in 1995, where he worked as a professor for theoretical physics from 1962 and held various management positions. From 1965 to 1967 he was visiting professor at the United Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna . From 1973 to 1975 he also headed the research area Axiomatic Quantum Field Theory .

In 1970 Uhlmann was elected a corresponding member and in 1972 a full member of the GDR Academy of Sciences . He was awarded the GDR National Prize in 1973 for his work on axiomatics and the algebraic treatment of quantum theoretical problems . In 1981 he became a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . Uhlmann has been a member of the Leibniz Society since 1993 .

Uhlmann is considered one of the most important representatives of mathematical and theoretical physics in the GDR. His scientific publications specifically include contributions to the fundamentals of quantum theory , quantum field theory , elementary particle physics and statistical mechanics .
