Arne Lawrenz

Arne Lawrenz (* 1964 in Berlin ) is a German veterinarian and has been the director of the zoological garden in Wuppertal since March 1, 2013 .

Life

After completing his degree in veterinary medicine at the Free University of Berlin doctorate Lawrenz in 1994 with a dissertation on "In vitro studies on intestinal biotransformation and absorption of albendazole" to Dr. med. vet. He first worked in a small animal practice and then in a horse clinic, before studying the life and behavior of black-footed cats ( Felis nigripes ) in the course of field research in southern Africa for a year and a half . The aim of the observations was to gain knowledge about the conservation of the animal species .

Lawrenz worked as a veterinarian at the Wuppertal Zoo from 1998 . On March 1, 2013, he was appointed to succeed Ulrich Schürer , the zoo director who retired on November 9, 2012 . He is a member and head of the "German Society for Zoo Animal, Wildlife and Exotic Medicine", a specialist group of the German Veterinary Medical Society (DVG).

After his appointment as zoo director, Lawrenz announced that he would redesign the Wuppertal zoo in such a way that the number of species would be reduced in favor of larger enclosures , and that the potential of the zoo as one of the most important and well-known sights of the city (next to the Wuppertal suspension railway ) would be better used and nationwide market.
