Ulrich Schürer (born November 9, 1947 in Balingen ) is a German zoologist and author. From 1988 to 2012 he was director of the zoological garden in Wuppertal .

Life

Born in Swabia, Schürer began an internship at the Wuppertal Zoo in 1966 . After completing his military service and completing his studies at the Free University of Berlin , he was hired as a volunteer assistant at the zoo in 1973. He became a research assistant in 1974 and in 1978 he did his doctorate on kangaroos , a project that brought him to Australia. Schürer was taken on as a civil servant in 1980, on July 1, 1988 he was appointed city zoo director and in 1991 senior zoo director. He succeeded Gerhard Haas , who was director of the zoo from 1967 to 1988.

Schürer worked for several years as chairman of the legal committee and vice-president of the Association of European Zoological Gardens and Aquariums (EAZA).

While he was on duty at the zoo, Schürer lived in a house that was part of the zoo grounds. In 2012 he and his wife and head of the zoo school relocated to Solingen-Gräfrath . On November 9, 2012, on his sixty-fifth birthday, Schürer was bid farewell to his retirement at the zoo with invited guests. His successor is the veterinarian Arne Lawrenz , who briefly held the temporary management of the zoo before he became director.
