Dieter Jauch

Dieter Jauch (born June 26, 1947 in Schwenningen am Neckar ) is a German zoologist and former director of the State Facilities and Gardens in Stuttgart , which also includes Wilhelma .

Life

Jauch studied biology and law in Tübingen and Gießen from 1966 . In 1979 he was at the University of Tuebingen in Biology PhD . From 1980 Jauch was in the service of Wilhelma, where he initially managed the aquarium as a research assistant . From 1989 until his retirement in 2013 he was director of the Stuttgart State Gardens and Gardens and thus also of Wilhelma. During this time, the facility for bears and climbing animals planned by Wilbert Neugebauer , the show farm, the bird free flight facility, the Amazon house, the insectarium with the butterfly hall, the new Wilhelmaschule and, most recently, the facility for African great apes (gorillas and bonobos) were built. In addition, the crocodile hall was rebuilt and the historic Moorish country house restored.

Jauch has taught at the University of Stuttgart since 1991 and has been honorary professor for zoology since 1996 . From 1988 to 2000 and from 2003 to 2009 he was the representative of German zoos at the European Zoo Association EAZA . From 1994 to 2000 he was chairman of the European Endangered Species Programs (EEP). He was also President of the Association of German Zoo Directors from 1996 to 2000 . He is a founding member of the Association of Botanical Gardens and was a member of the executive board between 1992 and 1998.

Honors

In 2003 Jauch was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
