Wilbert Neugebauer

Wilbert Neugebauer (born September 25, 1924 in Reichenberg , Czechoslovakia ; † May 2, 2015 ) was a German zoologist . He was from 1971 to 1989 director of the State and gardens of Stuttgart , including the Wilhelma belongs.

Career

Wilbert Neugebauer studied zoology , botany , chemistry and geography from 1949 to 1956 at the University of Stuttgart. In 1961 he received his doctorate with a physiological thesis. He had been working at Wilhelma since 1955, first as an assistant, then as permanent deputy to director Albert Schöchle . He mainly took care of the zoological department. Wilbert Neugebauer was in charge of the conception and construction of the then worldwide unique Wilhelma aquarium, which opened in 1967. In 1970 Neugebauer took over the Wilhelma management. To get this chance, several years earlier he turned down the offer to take over the management of the Zoological Garden in Wuppertal . A year later he was also appointed director of the Stuttgart State Gardens and Gardens. Under his leadership emerged in the Wilhelma numerous new buildings: homes for apes and monkeys Low, a Südamerikageimeinschaftsgehege, aviaries for owls and birds of prey , a plant of African ungulates , the Sub Tropics and Youngstock house. Wilbert Neugebauer headed Wilhelma until 1989. He was responsible for planning the facility for bears and climbing animals, but was no longer able to open it in office.

Wilbert Neugebauer worked as a professor at the University of Stuttgart. He co-founded the European Breeding Program (EEP) and the European Zoo Association (EAZA).

Honors

In 1989 Wilbert Neugebauer received the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
