Albert Schöchle

Albert Schöchle (born March 13, 1905 in Kempten (Allgäu) ; † August 10, 1998 ibid) was a German gardener , non-fiction author and long-time director of Wilhelma and the Blooming Baroque . He came from the family of the Schöchlins and thus from Charles the Bold .

Life

Schöchle's parents owned the Hotel Post in Kempten. After an apprenticeship as a gardener, he went to the higher teaching and research institute for horticulture in Weihenstephan . He then studied natural sciences and architecture at the University of Munich , the University of Stuttgart and the University of Tübingen .

After completing his studies, he first worked as a study assessor at a high school in Stuttgart. In 1933 he became director of Wilhelma in Stuttgart , which he remained until 1970. There he was responsible for transforming the Wilhelma from the originally laid out royal garden in the Moorish architectural style to the only zoological-botanical garden in Germany. In 1936 he also became director of the state facilities and gardens in Stuttgart . In 1947 the palace gardens in Ludwigsburg were subordinated to him, where from 1952 he planned the state horticultural show there , which was opened under his direction in 1954. The palace gardens were renamed Blooming Baroque just in time for the opening . He kept the management of the Blooming Baroque until 1975.

In 1970 Albert Schöchle retired. He wrote several books.

Awards

He was awarded the Cross of Merit (1955), the Great Federal Cross of Merit , the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Carl Hausmann Medal in gold and bronze (1954). He also received the silver medal for the International Horticultural Exhibition from the Central Association of German Vegetable, Fruit and Horticulture (1953), a medal for 25 years in the Association of Friends and Supporters of Wilhelma and a medal from the island of Mainau in Lake Constance.

Since 1990 he was an honorary citizen of the city of Ludwigsburg . He was an honorary doctor from the University of Hohenheim .

In Wilhelma, the Albert-Schöchle- Amazonienhaus , built in 2000, was named after him and a street and a bridge in Ludwigsburg now bear his name. A scarlet blooming cactus dahlia variety was also named after him.
