Elaeodendron is a genus of plants fromthe spindle tree family (Celastraceae).
description
Elaeodendron species are hairless trees or shrubs. The leaves are opposite , almost opposite or alternate, have entire margins, toothed, notched or studded with spines.
The inflorescence is axillary bürtig and sympodially . The flowers are bisexual or unisex ( dioecious , monoecious or polygamous) and three to five-fold, the disc is ring-shaped, fleshy, with entire margins and four to five-angled or lobed.
The dust bag open along the center of the flower toward or away from, the ovary is two to vierfächrig, each compartment there are two upright ovules .
The fruit is an elliptical or spherical, fleshy or leathery stone fruit that contains one to two (rarely three) seeds . The seeds are elliptical or ovate, flattened or triangular and rich in protein. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.
distribution
The genus is native to the West Indies , Africa, Madagascar, India, Macaronesia , and Australia, where it occurs in forests, woodlands and undergrowth.
Systematics
The genus includes around 40 species, including:
- Elaeodendron australe vent. : It occurs in New South Wales and Queensland .
- Elaeodendron buchananii (Loes.) Loes. ; it occurs in tropical Africa
- Elaeodendron xylocarpum (Vent.) DC. ; it occurs in Mexico and in Central America to Venezuela.
- Elaeodendron transvaalense (Burtt Davy) RHArcher : Southern Africa
