Elaeodendron transvaalense is a plant species in the spindle tree family from southern Africa , from Angola and Zambia to just north-east South Africa .
description
Elaeodendron transvaalense grows as a small, deciduous to mostly evergreen shrub or as a tree up to 9-18 meters high. The grayish to brownish bark is slightly rough to cracked and finely flaky.
The simple, short-stalked, leathery and bare, firm leaves are almost opposite or alternate or appear tufted to whorled. The short petiole is up to 5–7 millimeters long. The entire to more or less crenate to finely toothed leaves are up to 4–8 inches long and 1.5–2.5 inches wide. They are egg-shaped to elliptical or obovate and rounded to indented at the tip or round-pointed to pointed and sometimes finely spiked.
Axillary, stalked and zymous flower heads are formed. The very small, slender stalked and hermaphrodite, greenish-whitish flowers are threefold. The sepals are 1.5 millimeters long and almost rounded. The 3–4 petals are 3–4 millimeters long, expansive and roughly obovate. There are 3 very short, scalloped stamens that sit on the fleshy discus . The Upper continuous and multi-chambered ovary with minimal pen is sunk in the lower part in the discus and grow together with this.
Roundish, smooth, up to 2 centimeters in size, yellow and reddish drupes with a firm skin when ripe are formed. The smooth stone core is mostly lonely.
use
The fruits are edible.
The tannin-rich rind , like the leaves, is used medicinally. The bark can also be used to make tea, or it can be used for tannery.
