Gerhard Haas (zoologist)

Gerhard Haas (born June 26, 1923 in Sulzburg ; † May 16, 2006 in Staufen im Breisgau ) was a German zoologist and author. From 1967 to 1988 he was director of the zoological garden in Wuppertal .

Life

Haas studied zoology , botany and geology at the University of Freiburg and received his doctorate in 1955 for Dr. rer. nat. From 1955 he was a research assistant at Bernhard Grzimek in Frankfurt. He then came to Wuppertal Zoo as a research assistant in 1959. On June 1, 1967, he took over the management of the zoo and succeeded Richard Müller , who was director of the zoo from 1950 to 1967.

Under Haas' direction, the big cat house was rebuilt in 1970 and the penguin facility was opened in 1971. The ape house was built in 1978. The old bear pen, the ibis aviary, the facilities for small pandas and meerkats, wolves, otters, beavers and cheetahs and a new aquarium and terrarium were also built during his tenure. He devoted himself particularly to the training of the next generation of zookeepers , was chairman of the examination board for many years and was president of the Association of German Zoo Directors in 1983 and 1984 . He was also a member of the International Union of Directors of Zoological Gardens .

Haas retired on June 30, 1988 and lived in Staufen im Breisgau until his death.
