Arne Rettedal

Arne Rettedal (born July 25, 1926 in Madla , Stavanger , Fylke Rogaland , † December 28, 2001 in Stavanger) was a Norwegian entrepreneur and politician from Høyre , who was Minister for Local Affairs and Labor in the government of Prime Minister Kåre Willoch between 1981 and 1986 was. He was also Mayor of Stavanger between 1965 and 1967 and again from 1972 to 1981 and between 1988 and 1991 District President ( Fylkesordfører ) of Fylke Rogaland. He was also CEO of the state-owned railway company Norges Statsbaner between 1990 and 1995 , during which time he laid the foundations for the privatization of the company in 1996.

Life

Engineer and two-time Mayor of Stavanger

After attending St. Svithun Videregående Skole in 1953, Rettedal began studying engineering at the Norwegian Technical University NTH (Norges Tekniske Høgskole) , which he graduated in 1957 as Sivilingeniør (Siv. Ing.). He then worked as an engineer at Boy & Waage , before setting up his own engineering consultancy office in 1961, which he ran until 1995.

He began his political career in local politics when he was elected to the Conservative Høyre in 1960 as a member of the local council of Madla and was a member of it until 1964. Most recently he was mayor of Madla in 1964.

In 1965, Rettedal was elected a member of the Stavanger City Council for the first time and was a member of it until 1981. In 1965 he became mayor of Stavanger for the first time as the successor to Jan Johnsen and held this office until he was replaced by Leif Larsen in 1968. In addition, he was from 1967 to 1981 a member of the provincial parliament ( Fylkesting ) of Rogaland and during this time between 1967 and 1971 Vice-President of Rogaland.

As successor to Leif Larsen, Rettedal was again mayor of Stavanger in 1972 and held this position until 1981. His successor was his party friend Kari Thu in 1982 . As mayor, he was instrumental in the expansion of refineries and companies for the North Sea oil in the city , which was extracted 300 km off the coast .

Minister, Fylkesordfører and Chairman of the NSB Board

On October 14, 1981, Rettedal was appointed by Prime Minister Kåre Willoch as Minister for Local Affairs and Labor (Kommunal- og Arbeidsminister) in his government, to which he was a member until the end of Willoch's term on May 9, 1986. As local minister he also dealt significantly with questions of housing policy and initiated the dissolution of local housing cooperatives.

In 1988 he was re-elected to the Fylkesting von Rogaland and represented the interests of the Høyre until his death in 2001. At the same time, he succeeded his fellow party member Lars Vaage Fylkesordfører of Rogaland in 1988 and thus became the district president of this province. He held this position until 1991 and was replaced in 1992 by Odd Arild Kvaløy from the Senterpartiet .

Most recently he was chairman of the board of the state railway company NSB (Norges Statsbaner) between 1990 and 1995 and during this time he laid the foundations for the privatization of the company in 1996.
