Kongsgård, who started for the club in his hometown Kongsberg IF , achieved his first successes in the 1930s. At the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936 , Kongsgård jumped from the normal hill to 8th place with jumps of 74.5 and 66.0 m. At the Norwegian Championship in Mo i Rana in 1938 , he won the silver medal on the normal hill behind Reidar Andersen . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1938 , he finished sixth on the large hill. A year later he repeated his success at the Norwegian Championship and this time ended up just behind Birger Ruud . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1939 , he won the bronze medal behind Josef Bradl and Birger Ruud. At the Norwegian Championship in Alvdal in 1946 , he again won silver on the normal hill and only had to admit defeat Asbjørn Ruud . In the same year Kongsgård set a new hill record with 87.5 m on Vikersundbakken , which he improved again by 88.5 m in 1948. The record lasted until 1951.
