Arno Gasteiger

Arno Gasteiger (born September 30, 1947 in Salzburg ) is a former Austrian politician (non-party, formerly ÖVP ) and journalist. Gasteiger was regional councilor from 1984 to 1989 and deputy governor from 1989 to 2000 in the Salzburg regional government .

education and profession

Gasteiger attended elementary school in Zell am See from 1953 to 1957 and then graduated from the Federal Educational Institute in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer from 1957 to 1965 , where he graduated from school in 1965 . He studied then from 1965 to 1970 law at the University of Innsbruck and received his doctorate in 1970 , Dr. iur. During this time he also joined the Catholic student association AV Austria Innsbruck in the ÖCV , of which he is still a member today. After completing his studies, Gasteiger worked as a journalist at the Department of Immigration in Canberra , Australia, in 1971, after which he also completed his court year in Salzburg and Zell am See in 1971. He then worked from 1972 to 1977 as a guild secretary and press employee at the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce and was an editor at the Salzburger Nachrichten from 1977 to 1979 . He then worked as a journalist for ORF Salzburg between 1979 and 1984. After the end of his political career, Gasteiger became spokesman for the board of SAFE and Salzburg AG in 2000 , although he had already been chairman of the SAFE supervisory board from 1992 to 1999 during his time as a politician. Since 2001 Gasteiger has also been Vice President of the Salzburg Federation of Industrialists. After retiring as a board member of Salzburg AG at the end of 2011, Gasteiger was elected chairman of the supervisory board of Gletscherbahnen Kaprun AG (GBK) in September 2012 .

Politics and functions

Gasteiger was elected to the state councilor in the Salzburg state government on May 16, 1984 and was promoted to deputy governor on May 3, 1989. In this position he worked until February 9, 2000. In 2007 he became President of the Alumni Club of the University of Salzburg. In February 2019, Gasteiger left the ÖVP. He justified this with the course that the party under Chancellor Sebastian Kurz had taken. According to Gasteiger, it has developed into a “ right-wing populist movement”.
