Arno Marsh

Arno Marsh (* 28. May 1928 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ; † 12. July 2019 ) was an American jazz - tenor saxophonist .

Live and act

Arno Marsh grew up in Grand Rapids; his father was a professional guitarist and copyist who organized jam sessions at home ; his mother was a pianist and flautist. In high school he played in marching and concert bands. Early role models as saxophonists were Chu Berry , Ben Webster , Coleman Hawkins and Sonny Rollins . He began his career in 1946 in local bands that toured neighboring states in the Midwest , including in 1947/48 in the band The Duke Ambassadors founded by Sonny Burke .

He became nationally known from 1951 through his membership in the bands of Urbie Green and from December 1951 in Woody Hermans Third Herd . He can be heard as a soloist in Herman recordings such as These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You) . 1952/53 he worked with his own bands again in his hometown; In 1955 he played again with Hermans Third Herd , in 1956 in Chicago briefly with Stan Kenton and in Los Angeles with Maynard Ferguson , before moving to Las Vegas , where he worked in hotel bands, initially in the backing band of the country humorist Hank Penny . In 1960 he played with Charlie Ventura in the Thunderbird Lounge ; In 1968 he accompanied Nancy Wilson on recordings in Las Vegas.

With Carl Fontana he formed a joint quintet in the late 1990s, which recorded several live albums. Under his own name he released the album Sunday Afternoons at the Lighthouse Cafe in 2004 .
